History in Reverse Sci-Fi Podcast Ep. 24: "Andromeda Strain"

·1 hr 1 min·3 clips
Dr. Hall reaches the shutdown station with seconds left as the self-destruct counts down.
Caroline opens the show as a father-daughter science fiction podcast. She and Richie are on Andromeda Strain, covering both Michael Crichton's novel and the 1971 film. Richie is the one who read the book, while both of them watched the movie, and they say the adaptation stays pretty close. That leaves room to compare the two versions without turning it into a stiff review. Richie then sketches Crichton's background. He points out that Crichton trained as a doctor and, as far as they know, never really practiced. The book itself came out in 1969, and Richie notes that it was the first novel Crichton published under his own name. He also mentions that Crichton had already written five other books under pseudonyms. The conversation keeps its usual loose, conversational rhythm, with a few jokes about Jurassic Park mixed in. From there, they move into the story and the Wildfire team's response to the crisis. Wildfire tells the government that Piedmont needs to be destroyed because the situation is bad enough to justify drastic action. The government does not exactly move with the urgency the scientists want. The president wants to slow things down and make the decision himself. That delay matters because Wildfire thinks the town has already been blown up. The episode spends time on the story's communications setup, which is very 1971 in the best possible way. Messages move through teletypes, and the important ones depend on a bell that rings when something comes in. A small bit of paper gets in the way of that bell, so a critical message never gets where it needs to go. They also talk through the science-y business of testing samples in different substrates to see what will grow. Even the computer scenes get treated as a little old-fashioned, all letter-graphics and waiting for results to appear. The whole thing lands as a patient, plot-first walkthrough that keeps stopping for questions about machinery, government delay, and why a small failure can matter so much.
