Passion vs. Paycheck

Colin Huggins lugs a 900-pound Steinway grand to Washington Square Park — and was last reported sleeping on it homeless.
Hidden Brain begins with an anniversary. Shankar Vedantham notes ten years of the podcast, then uses the moment to ask what happens when someone finds a calling. The frame is direct, but the interview soon gets more intimate. Jay Haynes remembers looking around a consulting firm and wondering whether that version of the future could fit. The travel looked demanding. The male partners had families and kids at home. The female partners Jay saw were mostly single, with no children. Jay's answer was no. That realization led away from consulting and toward academic work as a teacher and researcher. There is relief in the way Jay talks about it. Studying questions that had been hanging around for much of life feels fortunate, almost unlikely. Work becomes the puzzle. Why do people give so much time to it? Why does it so often become shorthand for who they are? Jay points out that when someone asks what you do, everyone knows they mean work. That bothers Jay, especially in the U.S. and especially in the Northeast, where job and self can start to sound like the same thing. Research gives Jay a way into the problem. Talking with real people shows whether those questions live outside Jay's own head. Vedantham hears the answer before he asks it. Jay's enthusiasm gives it away. The episode stays quiet, but that is where it works.
