Patreon Preview #370: Penguin Baseball Draft Season Three w/ Janet Varney & Casey Toney

·11 min·1 clip

The hosts open a portal to draft mythical creatures for baseball, but their shady business dealings in Aruba threaten to derail the league.

Casey takes a giant breath. The room jumps on the near-comment, turning his choice to say nothing into the first mini trial of the draft. Then everyone makes a brief, doomed attempt to behave. The owners are warned not to fight, since scratches, scrapes, and league consequences already seem to be hanging over the whole thing. Mythical creatures make the premise bigger, weirder, and much harder to steer. The ads do not behave either. A Quince read turns into Aaron getting called out, questioned for screaming, and somehow praised for wearing a purse. The polish keeps flaking off. Sales copy about prices, factories, shipping, returns, Canada, rugs, curtains, rings, and baby stuff gets fed straight into the show's improv machinery. Then money starts looking suspicious. A fake-looking GPC tax charge turns into a Rocket Money bit, with panic rerouted into subscription cancellation relief. The draft keeps trying to come back. Each time, the room has already slipped into another pocket of fake concern. That is the fun here. The game is technically a draft, but the good stuff is hesitation, interruption, and overreaction. Even the ending cannot quite land. The preview admits the draft still needs finishing, then points listeners to the Patreon trial for the rest. Outside ads for Hacks and That Was Us sit around the edges, which makes the messy middle feel even more like backstage audio that got loose.
