330 - PAXU: When Marketing Kinda Works

December 1, 2025·53 min·5 clips
KeyForge was booted from the Ghost Galaxy booth at PAX, forcing volunteers to set up their own demo area.
A big table energy opens everything. King of Bling pulls SC Steel, Metalzoa, Blaine, and Mim into one crowded KeyForge conversation about growing the game from the table up. Everyone sounds happy and a little cooked. Mim jokes that three straight days of all-day KeyForge left him with half a brain, which pretty much sets the pace. Then the talk turns to getting people in. The group moves from friend chatter into demo stories, where the best pitch turns out to be a friendly table and a free deck. Blaine expected a more structured teaching plan. Most visitors wanted the real thing instead: sit down, crack a pack, and see what this odd little game actually does. Oh my gosh, it worked. The demo decks were there, but players kept choosing sealed decks because opening something personal made the game feel like theirs right away. Five games could be running at once. When the table filled up, experienced players stopped trying to play every newcomer and started coaching nearby games, helping pairs figure things out together. Simple, but it changes the room. The episode keeps coming back to how different beginner KeyForge feels from a full competitive season, and why that can be refreshing. People found Mavericks and got excited. Small card surprises became teaching moments instead of rules lectures, because curiosity was already doing a lot of the work. There was at least one rough game. Even that story fits the larger point: most people responded well when the demo stayed flexible and human. The close gets genuinely sweet. Someone points new players toward Reddit, reminds them the community is ready to help, and lands on the clean little point: do not forget how fun the basics are.

A grounded PAXU report about how letting people play does the selling.

Help From Future Self treats the PAXU convention as a lived-in report, not a neat lesson. The group describes demoing KeyForge, handing packs to strangers, and learning that most people want to jump into a real game instead of sitting through a tidy teaching script.
