2026 Update: Elyse

March 26, 2026·47 min·3 clips
Elise tells her father she finds it insulting that he gave another child her exact first and last name.
It begins in the studio. Jonathan and his colleague look back at a Heavyweight gamble: a call-in show that more or less failed until it gave them Elise. Failure, apparently, can still hand over a story. This one is messy from the start, because Billy's past arrives through a Sunday breakfast phone call. Angela asks for Billy. Then she tells his wife, with awful plainness, that she is his girlfriend, and the room changes for good. Elise does not try to sand that down. She warns that even the ugly version is accurate, unless something uglier has been left out. Billy sounds different from the man the host has been bracing for. After all the talk of avoidance, he seems ready to answer for himself. He says he has no problem discussing anything, which is a risky thing to say unless you mean it. Then the expected dodge never comes. Billy says he stayed away because he feared Elise did not want to hear from him. The fear hardened into distance. He says he thinks about her all the time, and getting older has made the loss sharper. Hope enters, but awkwardly. Billy was excited to hear Elise had reached out through the show, because maybe she wanted the relationship back. Nothing feels fixed. The update promises more, while the excerpt keeps the later turns just out of reach. Even the ads land softly around the damage. The show still sounds like itself: sheepish, tender, and careful about pretending closure is simple.

As heard by us

A father who stayed away and a daughter who didn't write him off -- Heavyweight doing what it does best.

The "Elise" update is Heavyweight working one of its messier cases: a family estrangement that started with a Sunday-morning phone call, Billy's wife picking up to find a stranger identifying herself as her husband's girlfriend.
