Gunsmoke 59-09-27 (390) Personal Justice

·25 min·2 clips
Marshal Dillon tells Clayton Morley he doesn't believe his brother is innocent, sparking a violent reaction.
The episode opens with Marshal Matt Dillon returning to Dodge City after a long ride, seeking rest. He is immediately approached by Clayton Morley, who demands the release of his brother Reed, held for murder in Wichita. Clayton implies threats against Dillon if Reed is not freed. Dillon and his deputy Chester discuss the encounter, with Dillon remaining firm. The next day, Clayton continues to subtly threaten Dillon before the trial. At the trial, Reed Morley is acquitted due to lack of evidence. Afterward, Clayton thanks Dillon, but Dillon states he doesn't believe in Reed's innocence, leading to a scuffle where Dillon knocks Clayton down. Later, Kitty informs Dillon that Reed is back in Dodge, forced by Clayton to stay and restore the family's honor. Reed is found badly beaten outside Dillon's office. After being treated by Doc, Reed confesses to Dillon that he did kill the woman and that Clayton now plans to kill him for dishonoring the family. Dillon refuses to protect Reed, citing the law's limits after acquittal. The next morning, Clayton arrives, apologizes for his earlier behavior, and reveals he knows Reed confessed. He declares he will execute Reed for justice. Clayton enters the office and shoots Reed dead. Dillon confronts Clayton, who claims it was a matter of honor. As Dillon moves to arrest him, Clayton draws his gun, and Dillon is forced to shoot him dead. The episode ends with Dillon reflecting on the irony that Clayton, who sought to avoid a hanging, died by gunfire instead.

As heard by us

A Dodge City moral dispute that ends in a plain, hard reckoning.

Personal Justice gives Gunsmoke a familiar pressure point: family honor set against Matt Dillon's unsentimental sense of law. After Matt returns from Wichita wanting a bath and sleep, Reed Morley's comeback stirs old loyalties and fresh arguments around the case.
