The Church With Christ On The Outside

·41 min·4 clips
The Titanic was marketed as unsinkable, but the church at Laodicea is similarly overconfident and unaware of its vulnerability.
This sermon is the final installment in a series on Jesus' messages to seven churches in Revelation, focusing on Laodicea. Pastor Craig Cabaniss opens by welcoming attendees, including children, and introduces the passage as one of the most well-known in Revelation due to key quotes. He titles the message 'The Church With Christ On The Outside,' borrowing from a 1990s sermon. Craig begins with an analogy to the Titanic, framing it as a cautionary tale against overconfidence and self-sufficiency, which he links to Laodicea. He reads Revelation 3:14-22, following a consistent outline used throughout the series: identification, affirmation, reformation, and motivation. For identification, Jesus calls himself 'the Amen,' the faithful witness, contrasting with Laodicea's unfaithfulness. Laodicea is identified as a wealthy church in a prosperous city known for banking, wool garments, and a medical school with an eye treatment. In affirmation, Jesus says nothing positive about this church, unlike his praise for Philadelphia the previous week. The reformation section centers on Jesus calling Laodicea lukewarm, using a metaphor rooted in the city's poor water supply from neighboring Hierapolis and Colossae, making the water tepid and nauseating. Jesus says he will spit them out of his mouth because they claim to be rich and need nothing, not realizing they are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. Craig explains this as a deception where the church has lost passion and become apathetic, compromising to resemble their culture. He applies this to the modern affluent context of Frisco, Texas, challenging listeners to examine where they place security. Jesus then offers provision: gold refined by fire, white garments, and eye salve, symbolizing spiritual riches, righteousness, and clarity. The motivation includes promises of fellowship, with Jesus knocking at the door to eat with them, and reigning, allowing conquerors to sit on his throne. Craig emphasizes that this call to repent is simple but profound, applicable to both believers needing renewal and unbelievers seeking salvation. He closes with a prayer for heart transformation.
