Rama accepts exile in the forest while his brother Bharata faces an impossible choice about the empty throne.
The episode begins with Rama accepting his 14-year exile in the forest with Sita and Lakshmana, unaware of events in the kingdom. After King Dasharatha's death, the ministers approach Bharata to assume the throne since Rama is absent. Bharata refuses, feeling guilty about his mother Kaikeyi's actions that led to his father's death and brother's banishment. He cannot accept the throne while the eldest son Rama lives. Bharata visits the coronation preparations but remains silent. He then addresses the people, declaring that Rama should be king according to tradition. Bharata announces he will go to the forest for 14 years in Rama's place and bring his brother back to be crowned. The people rejoice at this fair solution. The next morning, Bharata stops the traditional royal morning songs because he cannot accept honors meant for a king. He expresses his emotional turmoil to his brother Shatrughna, describing the kingdom as adrift without proper leadership. Meanwhile, Guru Vasishta gathers the ministers and counselors for an important meeting. He summons Bharata to the assembly hall. The people fill the streets and rooftops, anxiously awaiting news about the kingdom's future. Bharata enters the hall and sees all his father's counselors assembled, which renews his pain. Vasishta addresses Bharata, explaining that his father left the kingdom in his hands and that Rama went to the forest to protect their father's reputation. Vasishta urges Bharata to accept the throne and continue the Ikshvaku dynasty's rule. Bharata listens without expression, his mind focused on his brother in the forest.
