Giant Bombcast 934: Ohio Derelicts

March 31, 2026·2 hr 31 min·5 clips
Dan Ricker confesses to secretly trolling Mike Minotti for months with a fake Reddit account, leaving Mike questioning his reality.
The car read opens with everyone already thinking like game designers. A scripted Kia K4 spot gets twisted into character builds, turbo bits, collector cargo, and the practical problem of moving a huge CRT for old fighting games. Then N64 performance takes over. The panel gets into messy optimization, later pushes toward 60 frames per second, and the way missing documentation left people digging through the old tricks by hand. Hardware weakness becomes the interesting part. Someone treats those limits as something developers could use, and the mood shifts from complaining about the machine to appreciating how strange and clever that work could be. Decompilation sounds a little dangerous, which is part of the appeal. Ocarina-related projects, Star Fox 64, and the temptation of Mario running at very high frame rates all pull the room into side paths. Star Fox is the one that sticks. When the question becomes which Star Fox to play, the answer lands fast: play 64. Nostalgia gets poked at for a minute. The Super Nintendo game gets respect for arriving early and doing something wild, but the panel has no trouble saying Star Fox 64 still feels great now. After that, the later games get a colder look. The complaint is less that they had no ideas and more that they kept orbiting the thing people wanted without just giving it to them. Body Harvest wanders in too, with its fog, draw distance, and open world ambition standing in as another case of developers fighting the N64 in public. The whole thing has classic Bombcast texture: interruptions, agreement, redirects, and jokes that keep sharpening the point before it can settle. The ads come back at the end. TrueGreen and Verbo close things out with perfect lawns and vacation home savings, which makes the middle feel even more like game history sneaking through the ad breaks.

As heard by us

A loose, funny retro-games stretch where Nintendo 64 limits open into decomp projects, Star Fox 64, and hardware-era tinkering.

Giant Bombcast 934: Ohio Derelicts lands in the sweet spot where old game hardware becomes less nostalgia object than problem to poke at. The crew get into Nintendo 64 optimization, decompiled projects, and the clever ways developers now squeeze cleaner performance out of games…
