Good Night

December 23, 2023·22 min·2 clips
Von Syd confesses he once had a son named Adam, whose death caused a magical global snowfall.
The episode opens with Pip and Luca exchanging gifts in Pip's apartment, which sits above their workplace, the Ardent, a paranormal investigation agency. Pip has established a house rule: no work talk allowed upstairs, creating a sanctuary from the demons and monsters they deal with professionally. Luca gives Pip her own Roomba, modified to mutter curse words when it bumps into things, while Pip gives Luca a set of vintage Pokemon cards she found at garage sales. Von Syd, their ancient and powerful boss, arrives with his companion Jinx. He is unfamiliar with many modern cultural references, including what a Muppet is, and the group plans a movie marathon starting with the perennial debate over whether Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie. The characters display an easy, familial dynamic despite their supernatural professional context. When asked to share something as a present, Von Syd reveals that he and someone named Azem once had a son called Adam. When Adam died during a snowstorm, Von Syd's grief manifested as a global snowfall that caused everyone on Earth to sleep peacefully for one night. This disclosure is clearly rare and deeply personal, and it moves both Luca and Pip. The evening is interrupted by the arrival of Olivia Beersweather, who brings black paper packages from a mysterious figure called the Benefactor. The gifts are unsettling because the Benefactor has historically sent dangerous items, but this time each gift is surprisingly kind. Von Syd receives a portrait of his son Adam. Jinx gets a pocket Shakespeare collection and a toy fish. Pip receives replacement tarot cards that perfectly match ones damaged by blood. Luca's package contains a phone call from a friend named Alden she has not been able to speak to in a long time. Olivia's gift is a Blu-ray of Home Alone, which the group had coincidentally just been discussing. Jinx's secondary gift is revealed to be a haunted mystery theater installed as a new thirteenth floor of the Ardent building. The episode closes with the group settling in to watch movies together, with Olivia persuaded to stay. The tone balances lighthearted holiday warmth with moments of vulnerability and the looming presence of the supernatural world these characters inhabit.
