In this fourth episode of the 1910 season, the investigation into the supernatural menace at Endicott's mill reaches a turning point. The direct supernatural route following the manufactured creature has led to a dead end, but a tangible lead remains: the name Abraham Johnstone, which the creature had attempted to extract from Endicott. The team notes the bleak irony that Endicott shared a name with the dead boy but only paused to consider recouping half a day's wages. The investigators divide forces to pursue two leads simultaneously. Von Syd and Ida look into a new death at the mill, while Emia, Havon, and Faraday search for the Johnstone family. The new victim is Billy Hardy, a manager rather than a line worker, who returned to the mill during the late-night graveyard shift apparently intoxicated. A guard heard him arguing before he was silenced by death. No one saw the eight-foot mechanical abomination at the scene, but the targeting of management is considered a promising lead. The episode also features a conversation between two investigators reflecting on the process of cataloging their experiences using wax recordings. One describes the process as painful but cathartic, comparing it to life on a pressing board where each passing year adds a new stone. They discuss plans to put future aspirants onto the wax as well, suggesting the recordings serve both as evidence and as a form of institutional memory. The tone is one of methodical detective work layered over period-specific supernatural dread, with the investigators acknowledging that despite the extraordinary circumstances, there is no replacement for proper detective work.
