425 - “Batman: Caped Crusader” Cartoon with Freddie Wiedman, Composer

·57 min·5 clips

Composer Freddie Weidman explains why his noir Batman theme was one of the most stressful things he ever wrote.

The episode of Geek To Me Radio focuses on the music of the new animated series 'Batman: Caped Crusader.' Host James Enstall introduces composer Freddie Weidman as the primary guest, joined in-studio by artist Rick Burchett. Weidman begins by correcting the host about an Emmy award, clarifying he won for 'All Hail King Julian,' not 'Star Trek: Picard.' The conversation centers on how Weidman landed the gig through a demo process with six or seven other composers. He describes the series as a spiritual successor to 'Batman: The Animated Series' but with a deliberate 1940s noir aesthetic. Weidman explains the main title was composed before visuals existed, based on a verbal concept from Bruce Timm and James Tucker. He shares his anxiety about fan reaction to the radically different, slow-building theme. The composer details the scoring process, including spotting sessions with producers and recording with a live orchestra in Macedonia due to budget constraints. Rick Burchett praises the music as perfect and integral to the series. Weidman breaks down specific character themes: Harley Quinn's uses a detuned Chinese instrument and a slowed harlequin melody; Clayface's draws from 1930s horror films; Firebug's employs a creepy children's choir. He identifies the Onomatopoeia episode as particularly challenging for its jazzy tone. The discussion touches on narrative choices, like the cold Alfred-Batman dynamic and Harvey Dent's slimy portrayal, which Weidman confirms were intentional. He expresses excitement about the project's renewal for a second season. The episode includes promotional segments for Two Rivers Comic Con and sponsor Bugs Comics and Games, and ends with well-wishes for Burchett's upcoming surgery.
