Preview: Dungeon Masters - The Players Handbook | Episode 1

August 19, 2024·38 min·3 clips
You are William Deal, a Texas private investigator with a 5 wisdom score, tasked with solving a missing genius case in 1979.
The warning comes first. Immersive sound, adult audience caution, and dramatized event language tell you this preview is staged and already uneasy. Then the game begins. A dungeon master calls William Charles Deal by his new name: Rex, a human Texan private investigator shaped by dice rolls and narration. The tone loosens up. Strength, dexterity, constitution, and intelligence become evidence about the guy, not numbers waiting on a sheet. Then Dallas enters. He is missing, and he is described as shy, brilliant, and gifted with computers after finishing school early and making his own game. His parents sound proud, but fear has clearly got hold of them. Atari gets named. So do deviance, Satanism, and the old dread around new technology. Detective Deer listens. The narration keeps asking whether the adults are hiding something, then pops the tension with a failed mind reading roll. Funny for a second. Still, a child is missing, and Deer promises to bring him home. Then he steps in front of the press in a gray double breasted suit with pinstripes and diamond rings. The questions come fast. He will not say whether Dallas was kidnapped, ran away, or is even alive. The preview leaves him there, part hero, part showman, while the game keeps moving the pieces.
