Dr. Devorah Heitner on Parenting Kids Who Are Growing Up in Public

·56 min·5 clips
When should parents breach a child's digital privacy? Dr. Heitner shares the life-or-death exceptions.
The question starts close to home. Debbie names the parenting seasons that grind people down, the burnout risk, and the need for support before the episode turns toward October conversations about tech and screens. Then it gets more specific. The guest talks about teens who act as moderators on Discord or in gaming communities, and she does not flatten that role into good or bad. Every kid is different, which is kind of the whole point. For some neurodivergent teens, a moderated space can offer something ordinary social settings do not. The rules are visible. The boundaries are clearer. The role can make sense. The guest compares it to being a referee, especially for a kid who may not have clicked with team sports but understands what happens when someone crosses a line. There is real pride in that. She has talked with young people who felt helpful, seen, needed, and useful in those spaces. But the weight can be too much. One eighth grader she interviewed was responsible for escalating talk about suicidality or mental health to group leaders. That is a heavy thing for a kid to carry, and the girl's parents did not know it was happening. The guest's answer is curiosity, not panic. Ask what being a mod means. Ask what the group is like. Ask what your child actually does there. Just do not unload every question at once. A full frontal interrogation can close the door fast. The better move is to stay close over time and treat the online role as part of the child's real life.
