Israel update: death penalty law, Iran attacks

April 7, 2026·30 min·2 clips
Israel's parliament just passed a law applying the death penalty only to Palestinians.
Israel is fighting on several fronts. Jamie Poisson starts with the wider regional crisis: Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank are all pressing in at once. Israel has hit over a hundred targets in Iran, and threats between the United States and Iran raise the chance of a more violent next stage. Gaza is still under severe strain. Poisson also points to an unstable ceasefire, a worsening humanitarian situation, and more settler violence in the West Bank. Then comes the new law. Israel has passed a controversial death penalty measure that human rights groups say will apply only to Palestinians. The guest does not soften his view. He sees Israel's current posture as aggression crowding out moderation. His language gets historical and severe: he compares Israel's methods to Genghis Khan and argues that forced displacement and destruction sit at the center of the strategy. Lebanon is where the warning lands hardest. He cites Defense Minister Israel Katz saying Israel will not allow 600,000 Lebanese displaced north of the Litani River to return. The Gaza comparison is direct. The guest says Rafah and Chanyunis were destroyed, calls that a blatant war crime, and says it strengthens accusations of genocide. Poisson pushes for precision, asking whether the guest believes the goal is to occupy all of Lebanon. The answer is more careful. The guest says the idea of occupying southern Lebanon, and holding it for a very long time, is already strong. He argues that Hezbollah missiles north of the Litani make any limited occupation unstable, because the same reasoning could push Israel farther into Lebanon. Then the politics gets messy. The guest says Netanyahu's ideology and strategy have support from many Israelis, even if Netanyahu himself is politically weak. He says Netanyahu is seen as acting out of political calculation, lagging badly before October 21st elections, and trying to avoid prison. The bleak point: a strategy can catch on even when the leader attached to it is losing ground.
