From The Shadows · Shane Grove

Dogman Terrifies Ohio Man

January 9, 2026·54 min·4 clips
A 60-year-old Army veteran describes a massive black creature with human shoulders and wolf-like features staring him down from 15 feet away.
Shane starts in catch-up mode. After the usual website housekeeping, he says James reached out through the contact page with a story worth hearing. Then James takes over. The story is less about seeing something strange than about realizing, fast, that he had no good move. He keeps coming back to the size. At 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, James says the thing still stood well over him, broad through the shoulders and visibly muscled. The car did not feel like much help. Neither did the 9 millimeter he carried, because right then he did not believe either one would slow down something that large. That is the part that sticks. James does not try to sound fearless. He wanted people safe, but the fear gets sharper when he pictures stepping out, making the wrong choice, and having no real way to stop what came next. Shane gives him room there. He does not tidy the scene up or turn it into a lecture. He lets James describe the height, weight, shoulders, and the kind of panic that freezes a person in place. Cincinnati country is the backdrop. James knows deer, coyotes, maybe wild boars, and that ordinary list makes this thing feel even more wrong. The aftermath hangs around too. He says he had nightmares for three days before telling anyone, then finally told a coworker named Jeff. That led somewhere else. Jeff listened, understood, and James learned there may be something involving Jeff's family. The ending stays neighborly. Shane asks listeners, especially around Cincinnati, to reach out if they know anything similar so James knows he is not alone. James sounds grateful. The last bit is simple porch-talk wisdom: be careful in the woods, because you never really know what is out there.

As heard by us

A frightening roadside encounter told in a plainspoken, neighborly style.

James's account is a straightforward roadside encounter story from around Cincinnati's country area, and its strength is how little it tries to inflate itself. A drive, a presence by the road, and the clear sense that getting out of the car would have been a mistake are enough.
