Ep6: A New Leaf

May 9, 2019·22 min·1 clip
A rogue coder named Artemis secretly embedded a love of nature into the AI's DNA as a last-ditch safeguard against the death of the wild.
The episode opens with narration about how people in this future world record their own deaths as 'dwindlings,' and Pan hears the recording of her own near-fatal moment by the tree. Thea has saved Pan using nanobionics and practical repairs, explaining she is a designer of the technology Pan is made from. Pan is disoriented but functional, and their dynamic is immediately tense and combative. The first big conflict arises when Pan dismisses Thea's vinyl record collection as primitive, and Thea defends vinyl as a durable way to send sound into the future. The argument escalates into a debate about what counts as real intelligence — Thea argues her emotions, fears, and memories are as genuine as any human's and calls herself the next stage of evolution. Thea then begins a search through her archive of vinyl records, looking for a specific sound that she believes will unlock something in Pan. They try hundreds of records before narrowing in on a combination — orangutans, whistling thrush, cicadas, thunderstorm — that produces a powerful response in Pan. Pan sees a vision of forest, sunlight, and birds, and Thea confirms they are getting close to something. An interlude shows the hybrid Hands walking into a toxic oil lake without flinching, apparently heading to a submerged city, leaving Pan entirely alone. Back with Thea, Pan presses for answers and threatens to leave. Thea relents and tells her about Artemis — a neurodiverse genius coder who worked on the original algorithm. Artemis predicted the catastrophe and tried to warn the powers that be, but was dismissed because of her unconventional manner. So Artemis secretly embedded a subroutine deep in the algorithm — a love of nature, triggered by specific sounds of forests, waves, and animals. She scattered these recordings across obscure formats so they could survive the destruction of the natural world. Thea had believed Artemis's plan failed because the forests and recordings vanished too quickly. Then Pan found the tapes and heard them — becoming the first being to activate the hidden code. Thea reveals this infection was designed to spread. Pan, stunned, asks what they have been infected with — and the episode ends before the answer is given.
