Q&A With Pastor Jeff - Dec. 25

·42 min·4 clips

Pastor Jeff explains why he hosts live Q&As, inspired by Paul in Athens and John MacArthur's unscripted sessions.

The episode is a live Q&A session with Pastor Jeff Schreve at First Baptist Church Texarkana, recorded on December 25. Pastor Jeff opens by explaining the biblical basis for Q&As, citing Acts 17 and his admiration for John MacArthur's similar sessions. The first question comes from a congregant asking about Pastor Jeff's faith journey from being a Catholic altar boy to a Baptist pastor, leading to a story about his conversion through a high school girlfriend and Young Life. He then addresses whether he is tempted to return to Catholicism, stating he never considered it due to differences in teaching about a personal relationship with Jesus. Another question asks about discerning a call to ministry, prompting Pastor Jeff to share his own experience of feeling called in July 1995 after a sermon by Rich Halcombe, despite initial resistance from his wife Debbie. He discusses Psalm 37:4, interpreting it as a promise where delighting in God aligns human desires with divine will, using the analogy of a potter and clay. A question about the significance of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus leads to a discussion on righteousness and God's pleasure in believers. Pastor Jeff reflects on his growth at First Baptist Texarkana, describing the church as a hospital for sinners rather than a country club. He critiques Kirk Cameron's amillennial eschatology and annihilationism, arguing for eternal hell based on Revelation 16 and the ongoing sin of its inhabitants. The origin of Christmas on December 25 is explained as a Christianization of a pagan holiday, with Jesus likely born in spring or fall. Pastor Jeff distinguishes between the kingdom of heaven and kingdom of God as synonyms. He discusses Santa Claus's roots in St. Nicholas and Halloween, advocating for redeeming such traditions with good. A high school senior named Isaiah asks for advice on pursuing ministry, leading to recommendations for Christian education like Liberty University and an upcoming Ministry 101 class. The session ends with a humorous attempt to stump Pastor Jeff with a complex theological question.
