Justice Pending, Episode 47: Brian Shaffer

November 13, 2025·27 min·2 clips
Brian Shaffer walked into a bar on a busy Friday night and never walked out, vanishing without a trace 19 years ago.
Brian should be easy to trace. The case starts with a young medical student on a busy Friday night, caught on surveillance footage going into a bar and then, somehow, not caught leaving. That is the headache Claire and Susan keep returning to: the space between what the cameras show and what common sense expects. Brian had a defined life. He was born in Pickerington, Ohio, graduated high school in 1997, went to Ohio State University, and entered the College of Medicine in 2004. Then the episode turns to the night he vanished. The hosts work through the search in plain terms: an alternate exit, a construction site, hospitals, shelters, and the nearby river. Searchers found no trace. Cadaver dogs did not pick up his scent near the possible exit or around the bar, which makes the timeline feel tight and weirdly loose at the same time. Susan looks for a pattern. She compares it to missing-person cases near Sixth Street in Austin, where alcohol, darkness, foot traffic, and water have sometimes ended badly. The show does not treat that as proof. It is one grim, ordinary possibility to test while the stranger possibilities stay on the table. The questioning spread fast. Friends, bar staff, the band, and women Brian spoke with were interviewed, and the hosts say those people cooperated and passed lie detector tests. Clint Florence is the person who does not fit neatly into that picture. The former roommate refused a polygraph and later stopped speaking with police, which naturally draws attention, but the episode does not turn that into guilt. Claire slows the moment down. She says she would not take a polygraph either because of reliability concerns, even though an open investigation makes every missing piece feel maddening. That restraint is the better part of the episode. Suspicion gets room, but so does caution. Clint has not been named a suspect, and the hosts keep Brian's family in view instead of making one refusal carry the whole story. The ending stays unresolved. Anyone with information is directed to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers, and the case remains, as the show puts it, justice pending.

As heard by us

A missing-person case shaped by surveillance, uncertainty, and the limits of what can be proved.

Justice Pending stays with Brian Schaefer's disappearance from a Columbus bar and does not look away from the hardest fact: he was seen going in, and there is still no sign of how he got out.
