tty S Screen Test - Father Knows Best

March 14, 2026·30 min·2 clips
Talent scout Alfred Kay arrives, but shocks the family by wanting Kathy, not Betty, for a screen test.
The dinner table starts in a tangle. The announcer places the Andersons in Springfield, and the room immediately fills with prayer, golf complaints, and Bud nudging everyone toward Betty. Everybody talks over everybody else, which is half the fun. That busy family rhythm sets up the later surprise, because the Andersons have already shown how fast pride can turn into a group project. Then Mr. Kay arrives. Jim hears Metropolitan Picture Corporation of Hollywood, and the living room suddenly feels bigger than the white frame house on Maple Street. Margaret gets swept along too. Bud is sent to call the Liggetts and hurry Betty home, because of course the family assumes the visitor has come for her. Jim tries to look calm. Margaret keeps the welcome warm and practical, though maybe a little too eager. The children hang close enough to catch every word. Kathleen wants attention too. Mr. Kay notices her, remembers seeing her in the audience the night before, and stays so calm that everyone else seems to be performing twice as hard. Then the turn arrives. He is not there to plan Betty's future in pictures. He wants to discuss a screen test for Kathleen. The joke is simple and nicely aimed: the parents have built a whole ceremony around the wrong daughter, and the younger child suddenly owns the Hollywood fuss. Nobody is mean about it. The comedy is in the overreaction, the crossed wires, and the Anderson habit of treating a caller at the door like a family alarm. Even the sponsor copy keeps barging in. Maxwell House and the closing announcer pull the broadcast back to coffee, credits, good driving cards, and the next NBC program. Still, the household carries the episode. Under all that radio business, the problem stays small and funny: the Andersons expected one kind of pride and got another.
