Rachel Kushner recounts a shopkeeper's joke about becoming 'one of the women of vacation' while buying silk pants in a French village.
Bella begins with clothes. Rachel answers with the shirt Bella designed, a tie she has left a little untraditional, and the denim-on-denim feeling that steadies her. The mood changes when the pants arrive. They came from a small French village shop, and Rachel treats them like a doorway into temporary life: hot weather, looser habits, a self that only appears on vacation. So the episode moves by touch rather than thesis. A shirt and summer pants open the door to style and to the selves people try on when ordinary life loosens its grip. Then the talk turns to email. Bella remembers writing to Rachel with a strange amount of self-consciousness, hearing each word as if Rachel had already received it. Too much polish might show. Too much style might give her away. Rachel knows that feeling. They stay with the pressure of another person's imagined attention, and how correspondence can draw a cleaner outline around the self. A photograph changes the temperature. Bella remembers Rachel sending a picture of her son, and what stayed with her was how completely the image belonged to him. Both women have sons, and that shared fact slows the exchange down. Their emails start to feel less like quick messages and more like an older kind of correspondence, where waiting is part of the pleasure. Bella has also been reading Rachel's essays. The intelligence in them makes her ask a funny, slightly risky question: can being very smart get in the way of a good outfit, or of being seen as beautiful? Rachel catches the reversal. The close lands on people whose light lets other people glow too, with beauty and intelligence allowed to share the frame.
