John Cooper Clarke

John Cooper Clarke opens up about his heroin addiction, saying the only two ways out make you look like a victim or a cunt.
Bella Freud starts with the outfit. John Cooper Clarke answers properly, as if clothes deserve proper attention: the pale pink Brooks Brothers Oxford shirt, the structureless jacket, black jeans, gunmetal Chelsea boots, and the hat from his daughter Stella. He keeps coming back to carefulness. It does not sound vain. It sounds like habit, almost a private code, especially when he says his everyday clothes are close to his stage clothes and his wardrobe is full of near-repeats. Bella notices the hat, and Clarke gives it just enough backstory, bringing in Stella and Irina Dretva without turning the thing into a relic. Then the conversation wanders, which is where it gets good. Bella asks what she imagines he wears at night, and suddenly they are in striped pajamas with piping, candy-stripe flannelette from childhood, and Uncle Dennis returning from RAF national service in Cyprus with two pairs of pale blue tropical-weight pajamas. The pajama details are almost too good: darker blue piping, a lido-colored open neck, a begged-for night cravat, and Clarke calling them a "top-dollar item." Uncle Dennis comes into focus through style. Stylish, always out on dates, sharing a room for a while, and leaving behind aviator steel-framed sunglasses with Zeiss lenses. The clothes are not treated as cute trivia. They become a way to talk about family, masculinity, intimacy, and the glamour a younger person can attach to an older relative. Bella keeps the pace loose. Her teasing and little bursts of amazement let Clarke roam without pinning him to a neat lesson. Near the end, love takes over. Clarke calls "I Wanna Be Yours" a terrific love letter and says people all over the world have read it at wedding ceremonies. Asked about romance, he says he considers himself romantic to a sadistic degree. Bella calls it the most romantic statement she has ever heard. By goodbye, Clarke says he feels unburdened somehow, and it lands because the conversation has earned it.
