Sam's Breadcrumbs

April 19, 2023·1 hr 1 min·5 clips
Sam waddled on stage as a kid in a backyard Cats show, discovering the thrill of delighting an unexpected audience.
Sam returns with a detour. He tells the Ghost Family that The Midnight Disease now has three episodes, including one with Jocelyn McKenzie on the making of Sick and Suffering. Then Alan Brooks comes in. Sam calls Alan his best friend in the world, and Alan's Breadcrumbs gives them the frame: the first small clues that point people toward their lives. For Sam, that clue sits in teenage theater, in a program somehow being run by young people. Cast in Inherit the Wind as a much older prosecuting attorney, he went big and reached for a Southern accent because it let him sound louder and stranger than usual. Alan hears something in that, maybe too much seriousness, maybe the start of Sam finding a social family and a reason to let people watch him. Sam does not dodge it. He remembers finding a voice and a physical vocabulary that felt better the more he used them, even if he can laugh now at how huge it all was. Rehearsal becomes the proof. The memory keeps circling the death scene for Matthew Harrison Brady, teenage intensity, friendship, embarrassment, and the relief of finding a shape that fits. Near the end, Alan asks what the neighborhood theater version of Sam would think of the nearly forty-year-old Sam now. Sam says that younger self is proud. It lands because he leaves the awkwardness in.

As heard by us

A funny, self-aware account of how a dramatic teenage instinct turned into a creative identity.

Sam's visit to Breadcrumbs reads as a story about the first clues that point a person toward the life he leads now: a theater program run by children, an early need to be seen, and the odd confidence that comes from going all in.
