Pioneer Stock - Part 1

February 12, 2022·46 min·4 clips
Craig reveals his gay Mormon uncles' names are stored in a nuclear-proof vault designed to preserve every human's legacy.
A radio story starts it. The host hears Craig on the Moth Radio Hour, talking about a bishop who helped him rethink his Mormon faith and where he fits inside it. Then the credits toss out one small detail: Craig has been researching long-lost Mormon uncles. Family Ghosts follows that thread. Over a year of conversations, Craig and the host pull Brent and Larry out of family rumor and into a more painful story about faith, sexuality, and belonging. Brent is the quieter ache here. The episode presents him as a devoted Mormon who chose celibacy and likely saw his homosexuality as something to endure until heaven. That framing hits Craig hard. It shows how faith, family duty, and being a man of your word can make giving up love look almost honorable from the outside. Larry comes through differently, through jokes and little cruelties Craig heard before he knew what they meant. He remembers old euphemisms, his brothers' mockery, and the way both men became targets without anyone saying the plain thing. Then Craig hears the word gay, and the clues line up with something he already knows about himself. The fear is not only about sin or scripture. What wounds him is the pity, the casual assumption that his uncles could not have full love or full happiness. The shame works because it stays half-said: whispered, coded, passed around in jokes, never explained cleanly enough to challenge. Part one leaves Craig in that raw place. The story will continue, but this first half already understands how a family ghost can be an uncle, a rumor, and a sudden recognition of yourself.
