Evolve WMMA Show #76 With Julia Dorny

October 24, 2023·1 hr 9 min·5 clips

Julia Dorny moved from Germany to Florida with just two suitcases to train at American Top Team.

Invicta FC 54 comes to Boston. The host starts with the local thrill, calling Boston her hometown and saying the news felt last minute. Julia Dorny is on for a warm, rambling Evolve chat built around her fight with Riley Martinez. The bout gives the episode its shape, but the fun is how quickly Julia's MMA life bumps into amateur sumo. The host expects something heavier. Julia explains the weight classes, and how that differs from the pro men's division most people have seen. Then the gear question gets specific in a way this show does well. Julia talks about the wrestling tricot with her national flag and the mabashi used in sumo. The rules catch the host off guard too. Julia says sumo allows some hand strikes, including quick strikes toward the neck area right after the start. That turns into a practical fighter tangent about mouth guards, teeth, and protection across martial arts. Somehow, naturally, braces join the conversation. The host and Julia compare braces, permanent braces, dentists, and wax for the inside of the mouth. It is odd and personal, which is the charm. The episode keeps finding the person behind the fighter, then closes with plain admiration. The host asks listeners to mention Julia in a review and says Julia inspired and motivated her.
