He Paid Our Debt

Brooklyn gave her life to Jesus on a ski trip after her best friend's mom showed her a love that mirrored God's.

The episode begins with Brooklyn Samovich, the kids coordinator, sharing her testimony. She recounts her parents' divorce when she was four and being raised primarily by her mom, with limited church exposure. In her junior year of high school, her best friend's mom showed genuine care, which led Brooklyn to question why and eventually learn about Jesus's love for her. She gave her life to Jesus on a ski trip to Colorado over Easter weekend, citing the song 'How He Loves' as pivotal. This transformation made her reevaluate priorities like partying and sports, and she wrestled with unforgiveness toward her absent dad. Through social media and family, she reconnected with him, discovering he had also recommitted to Jesus, allowing them to rebuild their relationship around faith. Brooklyn now works with kids, aiming to be the caring adult she once needed. Pastor Van then takes the stage, greeting the congregation and introducing his sermon. He confesses that he is a worshiper but doesn't like music, explaining that music is loved for the memories and journeys it evokes, not just the sound. He compares this to scripture, which should similarly draw people into God's presence. The sermon focuses on Revelation 5:9, which he reads from the NLT, describing it as a song sung in heaven. The message, titled 'He Paid Our Debt', centers on living a ransomed life. Pastor Van breaks down the verse, noting its apocalyptic prophetic form and poetic structure. He highlights the cause-and-effect relationship: Jesus is worthy to open a scroll because he was slaughtered and his blood ransomed people. He delves into historical context, explaining that breaking a seal on a scroll without authority meant death, akin to modern encrypted files. Referencing Revelation 5:1-3, he identifies Jesus as the Lion of Judah, the only one worthy to open the scroll. The sermon then explores the concept of propitiation, where Jesus's death appeased God's wrath, paying a debt only he could cover. Pastor Van cites Hebrews 9:25-26 and Mark 10:45 to support this, emphasizing that the ransom covers people from every tribe, language, and nation. He concludes by urging the congregation to live a life that sings of Jesus's worthiness, sacrifice, and family, referencing Matthew 16:18 about the church's unshakeable nature. The episode ends with a communal shout of the scripture, aiming to invoke worship and unity.
