(EP8) Space Patrol: "The Giant Bubble"

April 12, 2026·33 min·3 clips
Buzz and Happy cling to a cliff on Saturn as criminals trigger a landslide to crush them.
The reel starts with a promise. Enhanced Radio Classics presents Space Patrol as restored golden-age adventure, then gives the microphone to Wheat Chex, Rice Chex, and Good Hot Ralston thunder. Saturn is no quiet stopover. Buzz Corey and Happy are already on a cliff face, chasing two criminals across thin footholds while rock breaks loose above them. The waterfall roars below. The old serial engine kicks in fast: danger, pursuit, clipped orders, no time to get comfortable. Then Dr. Berman enters the story. His process for building atmosphere shells gives the villains something worth stealing, and the plot moves from cliffside danger to locked-room sabotage. The crooks do not waste time. A gun butt drops Corey, the intercom goes dead, and chemicals are set up to turn the blockhouse into a furnace. The danger is wonderfully blunt. Nobody pauses for a speech about motives. The scene runs on threats, entrances, weapons, and the plain fact that the building may explode. Then the sponsor charges in. A cereal spot turns an atomic fire-control unit into a breakfast pitch, selling Rice Chex and Wheat Chex with almost the same speed as the chase. That interruption is part of the fun. It reminds the listener that this is old adventure radio, not modern prestige audio: peril, product copy, and bright command voices all sharing the same lane. The ending turns historical. The host steps outside the drama to praise Tufeld's voice work, connecting Space Patrol to a longer career that includes Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. The admiration is direct. Tufeld comes across as the kind of announcer who could sell the adventure, the promo, and the cereal without breaking the spell.

As heard by us

A tense old-school space chase with enhanced sound and classic radio swagger.

Space Patrol leans into old-school danger and does it well. Buzz Corey and Happy are stuck on a Saturn cliff face while rock falls, a landslide, and a pair of criminals keep the pressure high.
