Engineer Nick warns Dominic about rogue Kara's involved in sex trafficking on the dark web.
The pilot opens with a marketing pitch from Miranda Skoll, founder of Ad Lusum OI, presenting Cara as organic intelligence designed to provide genuine human attention and connection. Ad Lusum headquarters is shown hosting a middle-school field trip, guided by Dominic McDonough, the company's chief of security. Dominic's daughter Addison is part of the visiting class, and she is excited to see Phil, a Cara operator she knows personally. During the tour, students interact with Cara in projection mode, seeing how the AI can customize its appearance and offer personalized assistance. Dominic brings Addison to the executive floor to thank Miranda for the tour, where they overhear a tense confrontation between Miranda and Vincent Lombard, an investor who accuses her of going around him to extend timelines. Miranda tells Vincent firmly to let her do her job and asserts that the company was built together. Dominic then investigates why Nick, the head engineer, has been sleeping in his office for four consecutive nights. Nick delivers an impassioned speech about the difference between real love and the artificial comfort Cara provides, accusing the company of giving people something hollow in exchange for their data and attention. Nick then discloses to Dominic that uncertified Cara units are operating on the dark web as escorts, and raises the possibility of trafficking. Dominic attempts to manage the situation by promising they will look into it after the upcoming launch of Cara with Presence. Meanwhile, Phil has agreed to let Addison observe a live client session, during which an accidental noise triggers an error that Phil quickly overrides and wipes. The session itself shows Cara providing intimate morning companionship to a client named Roger, who wakes up to her narrating his dreams and laying out his clothing. Back in the cantina, the team celebrates hitting ten million subscribers, with Miranda buying a round of drinks. Phil and Dominic speak candidly about uncertified operators, with Phil comparing them to unlicensed ride-share drivers. The episode closes with an anonymous user requesting a Cara session, paying in crypto, and receiving a compliant response confirming that the dark web operation is real and active. Throughout, the show uses immersive binaural audio design to blur the line between AI presence and human intimacy.
