·1 hr 15 min·5 clips

Matt panics about the new D&D Player's Handbook release and Rob suggests sneaking into players' homes to replace their character sheets.

The episode opens with a comedic skit where Matt panics about the new Player's Handbook release, and Rob jokingly suggests sneaking into players' homes to replace character sheets. The hosts then introduce their review of the 2024 Player's Handbook, noting it's finally available after years of anticipation. They clarify this isn't a major new edition but rather a revision, comparable to 5.25, with backward compatibility as a key feature. Matt and Rob emphasize that players don't need to panic or immediately switch, as old editions remain playable. They highlight the improved organization, including a rules glossary and better layout, which makes the book more usable than the 2014 version. The hosts discuss character creation changes, such as origins replacing backgrounds and feats becoming standard at first level. They critique the new complexity ratings for classes, arguing that warlocks are mislabeled as more complex than wizards. Weapon mastery is identified as a significant mechanical addition, though it adds complexity and slows combat. The hosts express disappointment with the lack of innovation, noting missed opportunities like better integration of heroic inspiration. They mention the removal of fluff text for species and classes, with improved art as a trade-off. Matt and Rob debate whether to adopt the new rules, with Matt planning to switch eventually but not urgently. The episode ends with a humorous plagiarism check joke and a summary of their mixed feelings, recommending the book for new players but not as a must-buy for veterans.
