The call starts with a stolen sample case. A watch salesman says he knows who did it, so Friday and Frank Smith take the robbery detail from room 27A into the usual Dragnet grind: time, place, assignment, then one question after another. Tuesday, October 4th, is already on the book. At 7.46 a.m., they reach room 27A, robbery, and the first lead sounds almost too neat. Liggins says he met George and Paul at the Green Hat Cafe. Sam Huppel will not make it that easy. He remembers music, customers, and a girl with Liggins, but he will not hand Friday the clean identification he wants. Friday presses. Sam holds to what he knows and does not dress up the rest. That is where Liggins starts to wobble. He is sure about the Green Hat; Sam is just as sure the two men were not there the way Liggins says. At 10.48 a.m., Friday and Smith move to the Stone Hotel. Smith goes in to re-register while Friday works the cab stand. One driver fixes the loose piece. He saw the man from the hotel, not at five minutes to seven, but closer to 7.30. The man did not leave in his own car either. He took the driver's first fare to City Hall. Suddenly the case has something better than barroom talk: movement, timing, and a ride someone can check. The closing record gives the bill. On February 2nd, Thomas Carew Kernan is returned to the adult authority for violation of parole, and Barbara Jane Kernan is found guilty of grand theft.
