DHI 332 - The Disney Update - January 2026

·52 min·1 clip
Imagineers used a practice internally known as progressive seduction to get approval for projects at smaller scale.
The update starts with scope. The host does not treat Disney news as loose headlines; he reads the parks, films, and entertainment moves as clues about where the company may be going. Zootopia 2 comes first. Its box office success is less trivia than a test case for what Disney might do with the franchise next, especially in North America. Imagineering takes the tougher middle stretch. A Wall Street Journal article gives him an opening to talk through trouble inside that part of the company, instead of just recapping the piece. Galaxy's Edge closes the rundown. Disneyland's coming changes become a way to ask what the land is turning into, and what would need to happen before Florida saw anything similar. The construction talk has teeth. Photos and videos of new ride buildings are treated like signals to investors, because visible progress can make a project harder for a new leadership team to cancel. Some plans sound close to locked in. The host puts Piston Peak Cars at Magic Kingdom, Avengers Campus expansion at DCA, Monsters Incorporated Land, the revised animation courtyard, and Tropical Americas in that bucket. Others still feel shakier. The Cocoa Ride at DCA, the Pandora expansion at DCA, and Velen's Land sit in the riskier column, with recession pressure and CEO priorities hanging over them. Velen's Land gets the most caution. Some work has started, but the host says there is no opening date and it may not show up until 2030 or 2031. The investor angle gives the list more weight. Disney has long been valued for stability, dividends, IP, and lower risk, so the growth story matters. After the analysis, the host returns to support, reminding listeners that the ad-free show depends on Bandcamp subscribers, where more than 300 episodes are available outside iTunes.
