Episode 5: An interview with Afshan Dosani, Head of Growth at Kindra

·28 min·1 clip
Afshan Dosani says, "it's not Facebook, it's you" after a mentor pushed her to rethink creative testing.
Afshan Dosani starts far from growth marketing. At NYU, she studied politics, cared about international human rights, and added business partly because it made the path easier to square with family expectations. Then Marketing 101 clicked. The creative side mattered, but so did the strategy, and that mix pushed her toward a startup internship. Fab became the first hard classroom. She walked into a billion dollar unicorn during its bust period, which sounds brutal because it was, but it also gave her a close look at organizational pain points and the mistakes that show up when everything is in the red. Afshan comes across as an operator who treats constraints like clues. Product and operations problems are not just annoyances; they are places to gather customer signals, retention data, and enough business logic to ask for something bigger. Sometimes that means pushing past MOQs. Sometimes it means arguing for a reformulation because the edge cases hint at a wider fit. The host keeps pulling it back to the math: margin, profitability, and the ROAS break-even logic that got harder to ignore in 2023. If cost of goods is half of MSRP, two ROAS is basic break-even. From there, the episode widens into the messy early stage reality: email, CRO, total business strategy, and too many priorities fighting for oxygen. Afshan's sharpest point is about leadership discipline. Small tasks feel good because they can be checked off. The bigger risks are usually where growth is hiding.
