Kemi Badenoch MP, leader of the opposition

·51 min·5 clips
Kemi Badenoch's father lost his medical retainers after refusing to give fake sick notes to oil company staff.
Kemi Badenoch's story starts with movement. Born in London in 1980 and raised in Lagos, she came back to the UK at 16 because her parents thought there was more opportunity there. They did not agree on the move. Her father worried she would be alone without family, while her mother knew a close friend who could take her in. Badenoch says she wanted London too. Doctor Who and the pull of the city sit next to the harder reality of arriving young, missing home, and needing work. Lauren Laverne keeps the questions gentle. She asks about the contrast with Lagos, the McDonald's job, getting through A-levels, and whether the homesickness hit. Badenoch says she missed her family. Calls cost too much, so letters did much of the emotional work between London and home. Still, excitement seems to have had the upper hand. That is what gives the exchange its shape: the loss is real, but it is not the whole story. Then the music softens things. Her fourth choice is a hymn from her wedding, one her mother first loved when she heard it there. It makes Badenoch think of peace, and of her mother's habit of telling her to be calm and be still when emotions got too big. Laverne gives the memory room. The result feels more biographical than political, with faith, family discipline, migration, and ambition all coming through one chosen track.
