Defenders: Doctrine of Salvation (Part 19): Perseverance of the Saints - Arminianism

April 8, 2026·16 min·1 clip
Dr. William Lane Craig asks if a genuinely regenerate Christian can lose salvation, contrasting Calvinist eternal security with Arminian possibility.
The episode is Part 19 of Craig's Defenders series on the Doctrine of Salvation, continuing a multi-week examination of perseverance of the saints. Craig opens by recapping the Calvinist position from the previous session: once regenerate, a believer cannot fall away; anyone who appears to apostatize was never truly saved. He then pivots to the contrasting Arminian position, named after Jacob Arminius. The Arminian view begins with a distinctive doctrine of election: election is primarily corporate, directed at the body of Christ as a whole, with individuals becoming elect secondarily by identifying with this body through faith. Because the elect group as a whole is secure, Romans 8:33-39 — with its assurance that nothing can separate believers from God's love — is read corporately by Arminians as describing the security of the church rather than each individual. Craig then turns to Romans 11:17-32, the olive tree passage, as a key Arminian proof text. Paul describes Gentile believers as wild olive branches grafted into the cultivated olive tree representing God's elect. Natural branches (unbelieving Jews) have been broken off, and Paul warns the grafted-in Gentiles they will also be broken off if they do not continue in faith. Craig explains this supports the Arminian view that individual believers can be removed from the elect community through unbelief. Craig quotes Arminian theologian Robert Schenck from Elect in the Sun, who argues that scripture witnesses actual instances of apostasy, not merely hypothetical dangers. Schenck draws on Ephesians 1:4 and Colossians 1:22 to show God's corporate purpose of holiness, and then Colossians 1:23 — 'if we continue in the faith' — to show individual conditionality. The episode ends without Craig offering his own assessment, which is deferred to the following week.
