Defenders: Doctrine of Salvation (Part 11): How Regeneration Occurs

February 11, 2026·20 min·1 clip
Dr. William Lane Craig explains why even a strict religious leader like Nicodemus needed a new birth to see God's kingdom.
The episode is Part 11 of the Defenders series on the Doctrine of Salvation, completing the section on regeneration before moving to justification. Craig opens by returning to John 3 and Nicodemus to establish five things the new birth is not. It is not religious heritage — Nicodemus was a meticulous Pharisee and ruler yet needed the new birth. It is not biologically inheritable — Nicodemus's sarcastic question about re-entering his mother's womb lets Jesus clarify that flesh produces flesh while Spirit produces spirit. It is not a physical process but a spiritual quickening. It is not under human control — Jesus compares the Spirit's action to the wind, which blows where it wills. And it is not a matter of head knowledge — Nicodemus was Israel's teacher yet unregenerate. Craig then turns to how regeneration occurs, drawing on John 1:12-13 and Titus 3:3-7. He identifies two steps: repentance (turning from the old life of sin, malice, and envy described in Titus 3:3) and faith in Christ (welcoming him, which Craig distinguishes carefully from mere intellectual assent to doctrines). He explains that saving faith is trusting in Christ personally, not just agreeing that certain propositions about him are true. Craig then addresses the potential confusion between 'receiving Christ' and 'receiving the Holy Spirit,' using Romans 8:9-10 to show Paul identifying the Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ, and Christ as a single reality. When someone welcomes Christ in faith, the Holy Spirit regenerates the person's spirit, making what was spiritually dead alive and bringing it into relationship with God. Craig closes with a direct evangelistic call and leads an on-air prayer of commitment for any viewer who has not yet been born again, followed by encouragement to read Scripture and grow as a new believer.
