The Slate Culture Gift Guide

November 12, 2025·50 min·4 clips
Willa Paskin reveals her simultaneous love and capitalist dread for the overwhelming flood of holiday gift guides.
Willa starts with a warning. This is not a normal Decoder Ring episode. It is an audio and video holiday gift guide with Dana Stevens and Chris Melanphy, built around holiday shopping but still curious in the show's usual way. The thing under inspection is the gift guide itself: why a list of recommendations can feel so oddly satisfying. From there, the panel swaps ideas for loved ones and for slow seasonal downtime. Chris brings the music brain. A Beatles detour turns into a tidy little lesson on Ringo vocals, Lennon-McCartney credits, George Harrison songs, and who wrote what. Willa admits she had assumed the Beatle singing a song was usually the Beatle behind it, which gives Chris room for a Hit Parade-style sidebar. Dana then moves into movie night. Her picks accidentally form a theme, starting with a silicone popcorn bowl that goes in the microwave without oil. Its appeal is wonderfully basic: squishy bowl, little lid, regular popcorn, suddenly giftable. The episode stays chatty. It feels closer to Culture Gabfest than to a tightly built Decoder Ring mystery, but Willa keeps it from floating away. She names the format switch, points to the video version, and keeps circling back to why useful little objects can carry so much pleasure. The cheer is there, just not shellacked. By the end, the fun is less about perfect shopping than explaining why one small thing might make someone happy.
