I Am The Night #98: BTAS 3x19 - "Legends of the Dark Knight"

·43 min·5 clips
Adam Adamantium Ray is back. The hosts reopen I Am The Night with a reunion after the catacombs bit and thank James Attias and Brad Felicki for stepping in while Adam was away. This week they are talking Legends of the Dark Knight, written by Robert Goodman, and they use it to show how Batman the Animated Series can move from one valid interpretation to another without losing its shape. A lot of attention goes to how close it stays to the original material, especially since this is still a Saturday-morning kids show; they treat that faithfulness as a real sign of respect from the network to the creators. The Batmobile sequence becomes the main touchpoint. They point to Batman in the cockpit, the tank-like shape, and the harsh black-on-red lighting as part of what makes the scene feel grim, shady, gritty, and noir. The mutant leader material gets the same treatment. They contrast it with the earlier Jerry Robinson and Dick Sprang era and argue that the tonal jump works because every version still counts as a valid Batman interpretation. Voice casting comes up too: one of them thinks a performance sounds like Mark Hamill before realizing it is someone else, and that mix-up becomes part of the charm. The show also looks ahead to the 100th episode, which will be a tribute to Arlene Sorkin, and closes by reminding listeners that I Am The Knight is part of the DC Comics News Podcast Network.

As heard by us

A detail-rich BTAS take that shows how Batman's most contrasting interpretations can still fit together.

Legends of the Dark Knight is treated as a strong case for Batman's range, moving from comic-rooted contrasts to the way BTAS makes a tank-like Batmobile, harsh black-and-red lighting, and a grim noir mood feel like part of the same world.
