Amos n Andy - Sapphires Gown

April 12, 2026·22 min·2 clips
Sapphire demands a new formal dress from her husband George, sparking a financial dilemma.
A formal invitation lands. George Stevens starts thinking about his old full dress suit, while Sapphire decides society calls for something fresher than the dress she already owns. She wants rustle. George, doing household math his own way, suggests paper bags if the sound matters that much. The argument gets exactly as sensible as that sounds. Andy brings in a salmon pink dress, a warning about spots, and a 39.50 price tag attached to fresh trouble. Then the Kingfish decides the tag is the real problem. In his mind, a woman gets more pleasure from a higher number, so 39.50 becomes 89.50 with one neat little bit of pen work. The theory does not survive contact with the pen. Its ink already has a bad reputation from the bank, and after enough shaking, it leaves the bottom of the dress spotted. From there, blame gets passed around like furniture. Andy points at the Kingfish. The Kingfish points at the pen. Common sense gets very little time on stage. The return plan falls apart at the store, where the staff sees damage, not innocence. The Kingfish's fake store titles do not help either. Then the last turn lands: he asks about the returned pink dress, hears it sold, and learns Joyce Bees bought it.

As heard by us

A dress purchase turns into an argument over price, pride, and who pays when the ink bottle misfires.

The episode opens with a formal invitation and quickly turns into a domestic quarrel, as George Stevens and Sapphire spar over a new salmon-pink dress, whether the old one is enough, and how Andy helps steer the price-tag scheme along.
