155, Cindy McKay: Con Artist, Murderer, Idiot

·1 hr 38 min·3 clips
Cindy was the sole beneficiary of a $300,000 life insurance policy. Nothing else mattered.
Episode 155 starts with a no-beer fakeout. Bill and Sandra kick around Bud Light jokes, a botched-executions callback, and the usual side chatter that somehow counts as housekeeping on this show. Normal service resumes, or at least that is the claim. After a few off-format episodes, the case turns back to Cindy and the money mess around her. Gibson is already suspicious. Even with life insurance money in reach, he does not think Cindy ever planned to pay St. Mary's back. Then the story moves to Ocean City, Maryland. Police find her abandoned car 146 miles away with the lights on. Inside are a phone, handbag, raft box, and Walmart receipt. The raft itself is gone. Cindy's attorney tells Gibson she died by suicide after leaving a note for her ex-husband. The note goes big: she cannot face prison again, he should tell the kids she had no choice, and she supposedly rafted into the ocean. Bill is not buying it. Gibson sees a staged scene, and local police find nothing showing Cindy went into the water. No raft appears either. The hosts keep poking at the raft logic because the setup falls apart almost immediately. Bill spells out the obvious part: the box was there, the raft was gone, and Cindy's disappearance still looked staged. The episode wanders out with a horse story, subscription talk, ratings, word of mouth, and one last silly riff about telling an enemy.

As heard by us

A fake-death scheme unravels into a grim, absurd true-crime story.

Cindy McKay's story plays like a mean, absurd slide into disaster: money trouble, a life-insurance policy, a stalled promise to pay St. Mary's back, and a staged suicide setup in Ocean City, Maryland.
