Episode 24: Painting Session in Jaime's Gardens, Part 1

·24 min·2 clips
Lori shares how rude comments in an art group discourage beginners from posting their work.
Lori opens alone. Jamie has been on vacation, so she sets up the recording as a painting day with Vicki Wilson and Jamie Haney in Jamie's garden. The setting keeps getting into the tape, in a good way. Birds chirp, pond water runs, and the conversation moves at the speed of people working side by side. They miss Sandy, which turns into a fond aside about how serious she gets once she starts painting. Outside, everything takes a little more deciding. One of them calls herself a studio painter, and the others understand the hesitation. There is too much to look at. The trouble is choosing a subject while the whole garden is asking for attention. Then the colors take over. Phthalo blue is intense, ultramarine blue sounds tempting, and cobalt is remembered as the expensive one. Violet sends them into old bedrooms, lavender, deeper purples, and the joke that maybe loving purple is an old lady phase. The conversation keeps slipping sideways. A guitar lesson call breaks in. Video comes up. The painting carries on anyway. Outside has its own rules, and the one everyone notices is how fast everything dries, even with slow-dry help nearby. A car comes up, then a little grill they can take along, folding or collapsing or whatever the word is. That casual drift is the charm. It feels like sitting close enough to working artists to hear the choices, the forgotten words, the laughing, and the brushwork continuing underneath it all.
