Cousins by Blood · Matt Duff

Episode 1: If The Jeans Don't Fit

March 25, 2024·43 min·3 clips
Ivan Cantu proposed to his girlfriend with the engagement ring stolen from his murdered cousin's fiancée.
Sylvia Cantu opens the episode on a Friday night. Matt Duff keeps the setup stripped down: she is James Mosqueda's aunt, this happened in Dallas in 2000, and she has been carrying the murders for twenty years. The case is already messy. Before the story really moves, Duff puts the pressure points on the table: busted alibis, lies, finger-pointing, and an execution date that could come any day. He is open about his worry. He says there is reasonable doubt, and Episode 1 starts testing that through sequence, memory, and statement after statement. Amy Boettcher's statement takes over. An actress reads it, with light edits for clarity. It begins with an argument between Amy and Ivan Cantu at their Dallas residence on November 2nd, then gets nastier by the detail: a gun fired next to her head, a hand slammed in a door, a strike across the face, and a sleepless night because she was afraid. On November 3rd, Amy says Ivan was gone for much of the day, came home, went to the grocery store, and later called James at about 11:30pm. Then, according to her statement, Ivan said he had to go kill James and Amy. He left the apartment and returned at 12:18am by their clock. That clock matters. Amy says Ivan came back with blood on his jeans, socks, gun, and hair, while wearing James' shoes and shirt. She says he had James' wallet, Amy's ID, three sets of keys, doctor gloves, and instructions for her to park James' car. Duff tells the listener to pay attention, and it is easy to see why. This is the whole show in miniature: one witness account, a narrow window, and physical items that either back it up or make the doubt louder. The episode does not claim to solve it. Duff ends near the death-row stakes, saying he is not sure whether Ivan committed the murders, only that the doubt matters. If an execution date is set, he says the case enters a 90-day countdown toward execution or clemency. The clock is not just evidence anymore. It is the show breathing down your neck.

As heard by us

A methodical murder case built from timeline details and conflicting accounts.

Matt Duff opens the episode around Sylvia Cantu's account, and Amy Boettcher's statement helps keep the murder story grounded in a tight timeline. The strongest part is how concrete it stays.
