Mike Stratton got a 2-minute phone call from his wife inside a collapsing building — then the line went dead.

Wednesday night becomes a last phone call. Mike Stratton is in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., when Cassie reaches him from their bedroom in Unit 410. She thinks the building is shaking. The call comes at about 1.20 a.m., after the pool deck had already dropped into the garage. What she reads as an earthquake is, later, something worse: the deck failing while the collapse gathers around her. Then the episode moves to the exits. Near the elevators and front doors, debris has cut off routes other residents used only moments before. Shemoka Furman, the guard, looks for another way out. She heads for the side door that would normally open onto the pool deck and finds rubble instead. Live wires spark. Water reaches the ankles. Beside them, the tower has folded into pancaked floors. Ileana Monteagudo appears at the stairwell after seeing the wreckage too, and the size of it makes escape feel almost impossible from where they are. The guard tells her to follow. Together they cross the debris pile, past water and wires, while people are still reaching for the word earthquake. Someone corrects it. "The building fell" is the plain sentence that finally names what happened. Police arrive within minutes. At about 1.25 a.m., a Surfside officer comes up the driveway through dust, car alarms, and flashlight-lit wreckage.
