Swan Song No.3: Interview with Alex

February 2, 2021·11 min·1 clip
Alex, the voice of Dr. Sophie Bennett, reveals why her character is the 'worst girl' in Clockwork Bird's sci-fi horror mystery.
The episode opens with a brief introduction from Pippin Edelmajor, identifying himself as the creator of Clockwork Bird and creator of Hanging Sloth Studios. He explains that an uncut version of this interview and others are available on the Patreon. Alex introduces herself as the voice of Dr. Sophie Bennett, describing herself as an artist, writer, beekeeper, and a PhD candidate researching climate change fiction. She says she has genuine fondness for Sophie despite considering her probably the worst character in the main cast. Alex explains that Sophie is sardonic but occasionally sincere, and always in the wrong direction, and draws a comparison to Victor Frankenstein — noting Sophie at least stays with her creation. Asked whether she would take Sophie out for a drink, Alex says yes, out of morbid curiosity, though she cannot imagine Sophie in a casual pub setting. Alex says she would most want to hear Sophie talk about synapses and brain rewiring, despite not being scientifically minded herself. On the question of whether Sophie was right or wrong during the show, Alex states Sophie was correct about exactly one thing — that Robin would have died without her intervention — and wrong about everything else. She adds that Sophie probably knew this and relied on denial and mental gymnastics to justify her actions. Asked to summarize what the show is about, Alex says Clockwork Bird is a Greek tragedy about hubris: the human compulsion to fix people, often at the cost of their dignity and integrity. She credits Pippin with breaking away from Frankenstein tropes while keeping hubris intact. Alex's favorite moment in the show is the first Alice and Sophie scene, which was her first ever voice acting experience; she describes hearing it on Apple Podcasts as surreal. She also names the threading of unanswered mysteries as a close second favorite. On the production process, Alex highlights recording with Jesse as the best part: the two never rehearsed together, and Pippin rewrote sections of the script to include more back-and-forth because their chemistry was strong. Pippin closes by announcing that Clockwork Bird has hit 11,000 listens and that new project announcements are coming soon.
