Jewish leaders are astonished when uneducated apostles Peter and John perform a public miracle they cannot deny.
The episode opens with the liturgical designation for Saturday in the Octave of Easter. The first reading from Acts presents a confrontation where Jewish leaders, elders, and scribes are astonished that uneducated men Peter and John have performed a visible miracle. They recognize these men were companions of Jesus and see the healed man standing with them. The authorities confer privately, acknowledging they cannot deny the miracle that all Jerusalem knows about. They decide to threaten Peter and John to prevent them from speaking about Jesus. Peter and John respond that they must obey God rather than human authorities and speak about what they've seen and heard. The authorities release them with threats because they can find no way to punish them. The responsorial psalm follows with verses of thanksgiving and praise. The Easter sequence hymn celebrates the Passover Lamb who redeemed the flock. The Gospel reading from Mark describes Jesus appearing first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She reports to Jesus' companions who are mourning, but they do not believe he has risen. Jesus then appears to two disciples walking in the country, who report to others who also disbelieve. Finally, Jesus appears to the eleven apostles, rebuking their unbelief and hardness of heart for not believing those who saw him after his resurrection. Jesus then commissions them to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. The reflection notes that Christians cannot completely eliminate doubt in this world. Even those who hear the resurrection news firsthand or encounter the risen Christ still experience doubt. Resurrection transcends human experience and cannot be fully grasped. Christians cannot manufacture resurrection or control how and when the risen one appears. Jesus comes to heal stubbornness and inspire witness. The reflection quotes theologian Terrence Tilley saying Jesus left behind a community with anxieties, failures, cowardice, and sin, yet confident they were healed and renewed with power to conquer nations. The episode concludes with doxology and credits.
