Boys block her path and hold flames to her face, forcing her to endure their cruel test of her mountain ways.
The episode opens with host Catherine Inskip introducing 'Born of the Mountain's Chill' by Louise Hughes, first published in The Future Fire in May 2025. Inskip also narrates the story. The content warning notes colonialism as a theme. The narrator is a mountain girl born into a cold-adapted culture living in silk tents at altitude. When newcomers arrive in the valley below and begin imposing their customs — bringing blankets, building fires, and constructing a road with a toll — her mother, the community's trader, tries to accommodate them. The narrator is sent at age fifteen to work in the village drapery shop, alongside two cousins placed in other businesses. On her first morning she walks barefoot through the frost, wearing the gifted boots only at the village boundary. The drapery shopkeeper, Mrs Kellerson, immediately notes she is two minutes late and begins imposing rules: wear the uncomfortable cardigan, put on white gloves before touching fabric, do not handle money. At lunch the narrator escapes to a stream and wades in the cold water to recover before returning. On her way back, two boys block her path and hold lit matches to her face to provoke her, grabbing her wrist. She endures it, focused on cold sensation, until her friend Greener arrives. The afternoon in the shop worsens as the heat and stillness become overwhelming. The narrator hears villagers say openly that they do not want mountain people living nearby and that there is something not right about her. When she begins to cry and asks to open the door, Mrs Kellerson slaps her across the face and throws her out. Outside, her mountain sisters hear her shout and come to her. Their shared cold explodes outward through the village, extinguishing fires and freezing the townspeople in their tracks. The narrator shouts that this is how it feels, that there is nothing wrong with them, and walks away. Returning to her mother, she discovers her mother is horrified rather than proud. The story ends on that ambiguity. Inskip's closing commentary draws on personal neurodivergent experience to articulate the story's message that difference is not wrongness.

As heard by us

A cold, intimate fantasy about belonging, pressure, and the cost of being remade.

Born of the Mountains Chill follows a girl raised on an ice-bound mountain as newcomers arrive with villages, fires, and judgment, pushing her toward their rules and a schoolroom version of life. Its strength is that pressure.
