Cast of Wonders 633: Born in Flame and Song

·44 min·4 clips
Lyrica is born with sparks in her hair, destined to die and become the phoenix that carries her world.
Episode 633 opens plainly. Catherine Inskip introduces Cast of Wonders as a young adult fiction podcast of the fantastic, then names Jamie-Anne Fuller's original story. The story starts in panic. Belle throws herself at the narrator after the phoenix leaves scorch marks on the sill and jumps into the sunset. Belle calls it a monster. The narrator gives her a harder answer: the phoenix is theirs, and it carries their whole world. Love is the case being made. The narrator kneels before Belle and tells her she has a choice, a way to live and keep her family. For a moment, it works. Her parents cry, hold her close, and say they will love her whatever she decides about becoming the next phoenix. But hope does not stay light. Those same parents remind her that the whole world depends on her, and their faces hold guilt as well as longing. Childhood starts closing in. At eleven, Belle notices the other children being polite, thanking her, and staying carefully away. Their kindness stings because it is not ordinary anymore. They do not trade sandwiches, ask school questions, or treat her like someone who might simply stay. Papa names the hurt. He says the children may not fear her now, but they fear friendship because they expect to lose her. The narrator's repeated not knowing becomes its own pressure, circling choice, duty, and a child's wish to live. After the story, the credits name the editors, producer, nonprofit home, Creative Commons terms, and theme music with calm clarity.

As heard by us

A phoenix story about duty, love, and the cost of being chosen.

Cast of Wonders 633 gives its phoenix tale a bruised, intimate shape. The story follows a child who can hold a world together, yet still wants a sister, a school lunch, and the ordinary life that duty keeps out of reach.
