The Heretic's Handbook

October 14, 2024·42 min·4 clips
The hand leading Trent through the dark forest doesn't belong to his wife—it's the cult's ancient crone.
A notebook starts the trouble. Hidden in the forest, it mixes warped scripture, pagan philosophy, and drawings that seem to show human sacrifice. At first, the danger stays almost ordinary. A shoulder is healing, and the therapy scene is all stiffness, pain, and the careful language people use when recovery is not going well. Then the trail takes over. The hikers reach a ranger station and expect help, or at least a place to breathe. Instead, the station is abandoned. Broken windows, graffiti, and a dead emergency phone take away that hope fast. There is no cell signal either. The choices shrink: keep going around the loop, or turn back through woods that already feel wrong. The graffiti matches the notebook, including the inverted crucifix and the symbols that send Mia into panic. Then comes the smell. A sticky trash bag buzzes with flies and holds what the narrator later learns were human remains. Mia does not need the later explanation. She has seen enough. The scene turns from backwoods dread into the awful sense that they have wandered onto ritual ground. They retreat toward the previous campsite, reaching it late, with the narrator exhausted and Mia sharpened by fear. John Ballantyne's tale makes the handbook feel less like a clue than a warning they learned to read too late.

As heard by us

A notebook, a mountain trail, and an abandoned ranger station drive this folk-horror story into dread.

Campfire Radio Theater threads The Heretic's Handbook around a tattered notebook found in the forest, and the result grows steadily more unsettled as warped scripture, pagan philosophy, and crude sacrificial imagery take hold.
