Monster’s Game

October 31, 2017·35 min·3 clips
Scarlet confesses to murdering her rapist, sharing a secret only Rob can understand.
A mind keeps fraying. Rob is stuck with failed medicine, unanswered prayer, and voices that keep scraping at his sanity until another force answers. It is not God. The story shifts into law enforcement comparisons of Nan Kervis and Watts, two killings with different kinds of violence behind them. Rob notices too much, and murder is not just evidence to him. It is faces he has buried and cannot leave alone. Matthias' game fades back for a while. Scarlet becomes what Rob wants, and the water scene folds warmth, flirtation, and dread into the same small space. Then she asks about his prescription, and the romance slides sideways. The banter drops. Scarlet goes first, explaining that group therapy is for victims of violent crime, not the safer confession Rob seems ready for. Her memory will not loosen its grip: a campus attack, a stalking stranger, and a murdered girl still live in her body like moving image. Rob's sympathy starts to sour. The scene works because tenderness and threat breathe together. One person is trying to be honest. The other is hiding colder math. When Rob begins to confess, it sounds like a meltdown, but the story has already planted murder, manipulation, and the awful relief of being understood. The horror stays close. No monster needs to break in. The danger is already in the room, inside speech, memory, and trust.
