Interview: Dean Graves ~ The Unexpected Awakening!

March 28, 2026·56 min·5 clips
Two days after his wife died, Dean Graves heard a voice say, 'I'm your higher self'—and it was her.
Dean Graves comes in through a tender doorway. The host introduces him as a grounded person drawn to philosophy, psychology, and the human condition, work that has led to books, workshops, and seminars about inner peace. Then grief takes over the room. Dean talks about losing his spouse after about 11 years together, falling into a very morose place, and hearing a voice while taking out the garbage. The voice says it is his higher self. It is such an ordinary scene, which makes the story stranger in the best way. From there, Dean moves between ideas and lived experience. He talks about Locke and Hume, the humanistic turn in Western thought, and the teachings of Lao Tzu, Buddha, and Jesus as if they are all touching the same veil. For him, the world cannot be fully known. He says the Buddha was naming this 2,500 years ago, that this whole scene is somehow pretend, and that meditation made the thought feel real instead of abstract. Then comes the beach. On the Gulf of Mexico, lying under the Milky Way with no city lights crowding the sky, Dean feels reality as something like wallpaper that could peel away. It sounds quiet and enormous at the same time. The host answers with her memory of New Mexico skies, which keeps the conversation warm even when it reaches for the structure of existence. Dean is trying to describe a softer way to live: the world may be pretense, but it still has value. That view loosens anxiety, ambition, and the need to prove a life. By the end, the host turns it into a blessing. Mystery, magic, mayhem, and amazingness can arrive at 50, 60, or 12. Keep eyes and ears open when the divine comes close.

As heard by us

A late-life awakening story that treats mystery as real and lived.

Dean Graves tells a plainspoken story about grief, meditation, and a late arrival to a spiritual frame he treats as part of his life, not a performance.
