2.10 What's My Line Part 2 | A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Podcast

November 12, 2025·1 hr 28 min·5 clips
The hosts screen Buffy's iconic 'nobody messes with my boyfriend' speech and break down exactly why it works.
Spoilers first, naturally. Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristen Russo treat this as second-time Buffy territory, with What's My Line? Part Two credited to Marty Noxon, David Semel, and its November 24th, 1997 airing. Sweet sixteen math gets handled, then the IMDb summary tries to make Buffy joining another Slayer to save Angel from Spike and Drusilla sound simple. The hosts are not buying it. Drusilla becomes the episode's weird gothic snack table: raw lemons, custard, brandied pears, pomegranates, red fingers, and family memory. Landau gets her flowers. Jenny and Kristen keep picking at how Drusilla can be monstrous and still seem attached to human memories, especially when most vampires do not get that softness on screen. Angel does not count the same way, because the soul changes the comparison. Spike's later memories of his mother make the question messier. Then food takes over, as it should. The lemon monologue leads to Joyce drinking juice, Anya in the box, and the grim little inventory of what sits close to death. Life, food, sex, death. The order becomes a bit, because Buffy can turn a heavy idea into a rhythm before anyone gets too dignified. Wigs wander in somehow. Still, the detour comes back around: bodies, appetite, death, and memory are all tangled here. Then Kendra properly arrives. The office scene with Giles lets Buffy and Kendra size each other up, especially when Kendra says she does not remember her parents and has been sent. It is funny right until it hurts. The read lands on Slayer identity as destiny with a cost, with room for jokes, dread, and the ache of growing up under orders.

As heard by us

A loose, spoiler-heavy Buffy rewatch that finds family memory, culture, and Slayer politics in Kendra and Drusilla.

Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristen Russo use Buffy's meeting with Kendra as a clean way into the episode's bigger questions: who gets trained, who gets taken from home, and what a Slayer is allowed to want.
